The London Research Institute hosts a number of conferences throughout the year and has extensive seminar schedules as part of its education programme.
Simon Boulton – Presented with EMBO Gold Medal 12th September, Vienna
Simon Boulton (DNA Damage Response Laboratory, Clare Hall) has received the 2011 EMBO Gold Medal.
The award was presented during the EMBO Meeting in Vienna on Monday 12th September, where he also presented his work on the discovery of the anti-recombinase RTEL1.![]() |
Simon was awarded the medal in recognition of his groundbreaking research on DNA repair mechanisms. Awarded annually, the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) Gold Medal recognizes outstanding contributions of young researchers in the molecular life sciences.
The EMBO Meeting offers a European forum for scientific exchange where participants are exposed to new perspectives from topics covering the entire range of the molecular life sciences, encouraging them to look beyond the boundaries of their own fields.
Simon commented, “It was a great honour to receive the EMBO Gold Medal from the current EMBO director Prof Maria Leptin. I gave a lecture on my labs work that led to the discovery of the anti-recombinase RTEL1 and how our studies have defined RTEL1 as a key regulator of recombination in different cellular contexts. Earlier in the day I was also interview about my labs work by the EMBO Journal Editor Dr. Bernd Pulverer.”
Simon’s work has been recognized with awards from both UK and international organizations, including the Colworth Medal from the Biochemistry Society and the Eppendorf/Nature Award. He became an EMBO Young Investigator in 2007 and an EMBO Member in 2009. This year he received a Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society and an Advanced Investigator Award from the ERC.
