The Lewis Symposium - 8th April

A Symposium was held at the LRI to celebrate the career of Julian Lewis, head of the Vertebrate Development Laboratory, who will be closing his research group in August 2011 after 25 years with Cancer Research UK.

An audience of over 120 listened to an eminent set of speakers, including Lewis Wolpert, Bruce Alberts, Paul Martin and Alan Ashworth, describing their interactions with and memories of Julian over his lengthy and influential career. The presentations included reminiscences of Julian from when he first switched from physics to developmental biology, his wide-ranging influence on theoretical aspects of developmental processes and on neural patterning and segmentation in particular, and on his long-standing, major authorial contributions to the leading textbook "The Molecular Biology of the Cell". The talks were rich with anecdote and photographs, describing Julian's work and its influence on developmental biology in general, and on the speakers' research in particular. The high quality of the scientific presentations was reflected in the animated question sessions that followed each talk.
