The 5th International PhD Student Cancer Conference took place at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow from Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th June 2011.
The conference aims to allow PhD students from top cancer research institutes across Europe to discuss their work with each other, and to hear talks from two renowned keynote speakers. Students were asked to present their own work either as a talk or poster. The two keynote speakers present at this year’s conference were Sir Tim Hunt and Prof. Gerard Evan who were invited to discuss their careers as well as science.

A ‘Meet the PIs’ session was available for students to attend, which gave them the opportunity to meet the Beatson Group Leaders and find out about their research. There were also social events allowing students to get to know each other. On the first evening there was a meal followed by a Pub Quiz. On the second night the theme was more formal - traditional Scottish food was enjoyed and the ceilidh band ‘Crowded Croft’ accompanied the evening’s Scottish country dancing.
Other participating institutes included the Cambridge Research Institute, the Paterson Institute (Manchester), the Gray Institute of Radiation Biology (Oxford), the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the European School of Molecular Medicine (Milan), and the German Cancer Research Centre (Heidelberg).
