The London Research Institute hosts a number of conferences throughout the year and has extensive seminar schedules as part of its education programme.
2011 PhD Student Induction 20th-22nd September
On Tuesday 20th September 25 new graduate students began their 4 year PhD programme here at the LRI.
The programme begins with a three-day induction, allowing students to get to know each other as well as the Institute and other staff. Over the three days there are many presentations and workshops covering a variety of topics including organizing lab work, journal clubs, experiment design and keeping on top of literature.
The PhD program offers tailored training on presenting and writing about research as well as IT training. Students also have the opportunity to attend seminars given by international speakers and local scientists.
Students will give ten-minute talks at the end of their first term and research seminars and reports in their second year.
The LRI has an international reputation for research into the basic biology of cancer and
is committed to training the next generation of cancer research scientists. This commitment is reflected in the way we recruit and train our students. Many of our former PhD students now head their own successful research laboratories at research institutes and universities throughout the world.

LRI PhD students are registered at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University College London. They will carry out research under the day-to-day guidance of a personal Supervisor and will also have the support of various colleagues including the Thesis Committee and Graduate Student Advisors, and Student Buddies during their first year who helps them settle in and encourage communication across the year groups and within the Institute.
Throughout the programme the students will be asked to critically examine the background literature relevant to their specific research area. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in making and testing hypotheses, in developing new theories, and in planning and conducting experiments. They will also receive constructive feedback of written work and oral presentations, in order for them to develop skills in writing and oral presentation.
During their 4 years of study the students will attend a number of conferences and meetings;
• Cancer Research UK Students’ Meeting - provides an opportunity for students funded by Cancer Research UK to meet each other and staff of Cancer Research UK. It provides an informal setting to discuss research and relevant issues.
• International Student Conference - organised by Students, for Students. The 2011 conference was held in June at the Beatson Institute in Glasgow. The 2012 meeting will be held in Amsterdam and will be organised by the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI).
• National Cancer Research Institute Conference - In their third year, all LRI Students attend the National Cancer Research Institute Conference, which is held each autumn. The meeting covers basic, clinical and translational cancer research and has an extensive programme that includes plenary sessions, parallel sessions, symposia and workshops on careers, ethics etc.
Applications for the 2012 PhD Programme open on Monday 26th September. For more information on our PhD programme click here.
