Where our students go next

Completing a PhD at the London Research Institute provides a strong foundation for a scientific career.

In addition to laboratory training, our students are encouraged to plan ahead and think about what they would like to do next, helped by a series of careers talks called ‘What can you be with a PhD?’.  External speakers informally discuss their own careers in, among others, scientific publishing, science communication, technology transfer, science administration, as well as how to choose and get a postdoc position.

Where our students go next pie chart

After completing their PhD, nearly 65% of our students choose to continue their scientific career by taking up postdoctoral research positions at institutions all over the world, including the Sloan-Kettering and Rockefeller Institutes (New York), the Institute of Molecular Pathology (Vienna), Medical Research Council Laboratories (London and Cambridge), the UCSF Cancer Centre (San Francisco), EMBL (Heidelberg), WEHI (Melbourne) and the University of Kyoto.  A number of LRI students eventually go on to head their own research laboratories. Our clinical research fellows (13%) return to their clinical career track, often carrying out research in parallel with their clinical commitments.

However, not all of our students choose an academic career.  Others obtain careers in Pharma or Life-Sciences companies, or in Technology Transfer.

The extensive skill-set gained during a PhD at the LRI is not purely scientific and can be applied to many other career paths, as demonstrated by those students who choose to leave the bench, taking up careers in science communication, science policy, publishing, administration or management consulting.
